Call for Papers: Symposium on (Im)politeness and Identity

The Symposium on (Im)politeness and Identity will be held from October 19 to 21, 2018 at Nanjing University, China. Plenary speakers already confirmed include:

Winnie Cheng (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University)

Yueguo Gu (The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences)

Daniel Kadar (The Hungarian Academy of Sciences)

Ziran He (Guangdong University of Foreign Studies)

Gang He (East China Normal University)

Yongping Ran (Guangdong University of Foreign Studies)

Chaoqun Xie (Fujian Normal University)

Shaojie Zhang (Northeast Normal University)

The symposium includes but is not limited to the following topics:

1. New theoretical perspective on (im)politeness/identity

2. Interactions between (im)politeness and identity

3. Variational research on (im)politeness

4. Contrastive studies of (im)politeness

5. Cultural studies of (im)politeness/identity

6. (Im)politeness/Identity in the cyber space

7. Acquisitional studies of (im)politeness/identity

8. Developmental studies of (im)politeness/identity

9. Teaching L2 politeness

10. Interface studies of (im)politeness/identity

The symposium will arrange an “East Asian Pragmatics Award” for the best paper presented by a Chinese young scholar aged under 35. The prize will be £200 and 3-year free subscription to East Asian Pragmatics (2018-2020). Those who are interested in competing for the award are requested to send the full-text paper to be presented to the following email address before August 31.
